Statement
Tom Freitag’s artistic approach focuses on serial production with used and random materials such as wooden boards from bulky waste, plastic flowers from the flea market and leftovers from previous projects. He loves rough „handiwork“ and transforms coarse materials into „aesthetically pleasing“ works through the use of construction materials and tools as well as bright pastel colors. He deliberately breaks with the rough character of the source materials and gives them a new, dolled-up identity.
His paintings of angels critically reflect body and role images by simultaneously glorifying and reinterpreting them in an imaginative way. These works are a mixture of provocative criticism and ironic glorification, inviting the viewer to question common ideals of beauty and social norms. Through his deliberate DIY aesthetic, he creates works that are familiar yet challenging.
